What is the difference between BOPP tape and ordinary tape?

Jinhua JBD New Material Technology Co., Ltd. 2026.04.03

In fact, what people commonly refer to as "ordinary tape" usually means BOPP tape, because BOPP (biaxially oriented polypropylene film) is the most mainstream substrate used in the production of transparent packing tape. Therefore, there is essentially no difference in material between the two. The real difference lies in the variations in quality and performance levels within the same product category.

Ordinary quality BOPP tape often makes compromises in materials and processes to reduce costs. The film may contain recycled materials, resulting in poor tensile strength and a tendency to break easily. Although it may feel thick to the touch, its actual strength is low. In terms of adhesion, ordinary tape may have acceptable initial tack, but its holding power is poor. It tends to lift or fall off after being applied for a while, especially in low-temperature or dry environments. In appearance, this type of tape may appear cloudy yellow, light green, or uneven in color due to the addition of impurities or colorants, resulting in low transparency. Furthermore, to further control costs, the adhesive may use solvents such as gasoline, giving off a pungent odor. The tape also ages easily and may become brittle and powdery after being left in the air for about six months, losing its usability.

In contrast, high-quality or specialty BOPP tape uses better raw materials and stricter processes. It is made from pure BOPP film, offering excellent tensile and tear resistance, ensuring that packages remain securely sealed during transportation and storage. In terms of adhesion, high-quality tape uses premium adhesive formulations, such as solvent-based acrylic or high-performance hot melt adhesives, providing long-lasting and balanced bonding strength with excellent weatherability. It maintains strong adhesion even in high-temperature, low-temperature, or humid environments. In appearance, this type of tape is highly transparent with a smooth and uniform adhesive surface, making it almost invisible when applied to product packaging and not interfering with the display of labels or patterns. In terms of environmental protection and durability, some high-quality tapes use water-based adhesives or eco-friendly materials, have low odor, and can even be designed to be recyclable. They also feature UV resistance and aging resistance, allowing for long-term storage without loss of performance.

In summary, when people ask, "What is the difference between BOPP tape and ordinary tape?" the core answer is actually the difference between high-performance, high-reliability BOPP tape and low-quality, low-cost BOPP tape. Ordinary tape sacrifices long-lasting adhesion, material strength, and long-term reliability in exchange for a low price, making it suitable for short-term, temporary bundling with low requirements. High-quality BOPP tape, on the other hand, ensures high transparency, stable adhesion, excellent tensile strength, and outstanding weatherability, truly guaranteeing the safety and efficiency of packaging and transportation. Therefore, when choosing tape, one should not just look at the name but pay attention to specific quality parameters such as substrate quality, adhesive type, thickness, and tensile strength, and make the appropriate choice based on actual needs.
